Perimenopause Stole My Abs…

When I turned 45, I was miserable.

Nothing prepared me for the wrath of perimenopause.

It was like someone flipped a switch, my body revolted, and my body no longer felt like my body.

You see, I’m fortunate in that IF my nutrition is on point, my hormones are balanced, I’m lifting heavy enough weights, and I’m walking 10k+ steps per day, I am inclined to have abs.

All my life my abs have been an external indication to me that everything is going well on the inside.

For the majority of my life I have had a 6-pack except for 2 times:

(Well maybe 3 because during the pandemic I enjoyed extra almond butter on top of my almond butter, with Love Crunch on top of the sweet potato carbs in my nightly pre-bedtime casein. Don’t judge, you know you had a quarantine vice too 😉 …)

  1. When I was 41 and working to balance my Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  2. When I turned 45, the shizz hit the fan, and perimenopause stole my abs

When I turned 45, perimenopause rocked my world…. and not in a good way.

I felt like I had no control over my body and that my hormones had gone rogue and were running the show

My body became extremely unforgiving and it did not matter how meticulous I was with my nutrition.

I experienced all of the horrors of perimenopause from bloating+inflammation to Genitourinary Syndrome (i.e. vaginal dryness), and I even started to have visceral fat around my lower abs.

Everything I had been doing with fitness and nutrition for years no longer worked and my egg-carton abs were no longer to be found.

Here is me at 45, bloated, inflamed, visceral fat growing around my belly:

Aesthetics aside, visceral fat is the worst kind of fat that you can have because it’s the fat in the abdominal area between organs and it puts you at an increased risk for colorectal and breast cancers, dementia, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

When you go through menopause, and essentially experience puberty in reverse, your hormones are all over the place. With that, cortisol increases and so does insulin and as a result, you start to get belly fat.

At first I thought, “Now that I am middle aged, maybe this is how it’s going to be?”

I truly almost succumbed to the belief that this is what happens when you age, and this is how my abs will look from here on out, and there was nothing I could do about it.

Then, I refused to accept that, and said to myself, “HELL NO!”

I doubled down on my knowledge and know how as a fitness coach to find the solution to feel amazing and get my abs back.

Here is me now at 48, lean, “sculpty”, and strong and hello egg carton abs, you are finally back!

Now, at 48, I am thriving and helping other women going through the menopause years do the same.

Some of the things that helped me the most were:

  • Adjusting my macros to a high protein diet
  • 5 days/week of strength training
  • Zone 2 Cardio 7 days/week
  • Targeted midlife supplements like Creatine

With that, I created the Midlife Muscles & Macros method.

In the Midlife Muscles & Macros group coaching program, I want to teach you the method I created that delivered massive results, and help you get your abs back or get the abs you never had, at midlife.

YES. You can build abs at MIDLIFE.
