Do ONE THING That Scares & Excites You This New Year

Reflections on my 2017 Cross Country Drive from Boston to Las Vegas

Happy New Year! I hope your New Year is off to an excellent start.

Two years ago today on January 4, 2017 I was driving 690 miles from Nashville to Oklahoma City on my cross country drive from Boston to Las Vegas. Yes, I drove cross country all by myself from Boston to Las Vegas when my husband Eric and I moved out to Vegas because two months earlier in November 2016, Eric had made the drive all by himself as well in order to start his position with Cirque du Soleil.

It was interesting how some people reacted when I told them I drove cross country by myself, “YOU DROVE ALL BY YOURSELF??!!”.Like it was 1958 and God forbid a woman drive cross country by herself.

Yes, I’m sure I took different precautions than a man would as I drove by myself cross country and I called Eric and my parents often during the drive to check in so that they knew I was safe and sound. However, it was interesting to me that some people had the mentality that I should not be driving cross country by myself because I am a woman.

The drive from Nashville to Oklahoma City was my longest drive. I remember by the end of that drive I was so tired I needed toothpicks to keep my eyes open and I could not wait to make it to Oklahoma City. During the last hour of that drive I was blasting Adele and singing so loudly to keep myself awake and to keep myself going and also apparently speeding because when I was about 30 minutes away from my hotel destination in Oklahoma City I was pulled over by a cop for speeding.

When I rolled down the window to speak with him, with Adele still blasting as I searched for the volume control, I remember thinking surely I must be screwed because Adele is still blasting and he’s looking at the back seat of my packed car like “What the hell is going on here??”.

Fortunately he let me go, no ticket no warning. Just told me to slow down and stay safe. I was lucky because I’m sure that would have been a pricey ticket!

What will you do in 2019 that scares and excites you all at the same time and gets you out of your comfort zone???

Yours in Strength,

Artemis

  1. i hope i am reaching the author of the account of Russian Gym and ballet with Madame Nora…I am sad to say that Madame Nora Irinova Venchi, founder of the Barre method and Russian Gym, prima ballerina, and educator of many ballet students in Massachusetts, passed away on December 27, 2018 at the age of 92. She was well loved by the residents of the building she managed here in West Palm Beach, FL. We residents and you dancers were her family, as she had no family, no husband, and no children. She was kind and wonderful to us all and she will be greatly missed.
