At 48, Can You Get Shredded With A Home Gym?

HELL YA!

Last October, I packed up my house and beautiful garage gym in Vegas to move to New Orleans.

My husband and I were going to be renting a small one bedroom apartment, for an undetermined amount of time, so I had to be selective about what gym equipment would go into storage and what I would bring with me to Nola.

I wanted to keep up with my training as much as possible with my home gym, without having to join a gym.

I brought:

  • Kettlebells from 8kg (18lbs) – 32kg (70lbs) – 572lbs to be exact lol! I had to do the math to know what I would be pulling in the trailer
  • A bench for chest press, rear foot elevated split squats, chest elevated single leg glute bridges
  • A step for deficit drop step lunges and deadlifts
  • A small box for high plank one-arm rows and step-ups
  • An ab wheel
  • A TRX
  • $5 Furniture movers (can be used instead of $40 Valslides for things like body saws)
  • Bands
  • A weight belt for weighted pull-ups
  • Some of the rubber tile floor from the garage gym

Once I arrived in Nola I purchased a pull-up bar for the doorway, BUT I was only able to use it a few times because the door frames in our apartment couldn’t hold up to my bodyweight + pull-up reps. The last thing I wanted to do was tear down the door frame in our rental from doing pull-ups!

For the past 6 months, I have only been training from our apartment. I haven’t joined a gym, and I haven’t been able to do pull-ups. With my little home gym, I still gained muscle, got stronger and built the 48 year old bod I have.

I will say that when it comes to a home gym, kettlebells are KEY.

Since you can use kettlebells for both strength training+cardio, and managing the asymmetrical shape of the kettlebell challenges your body more than a symmetrical dumbbell, if used correctly, and combined with targeted macro based nutrition for building muscle and fueling performance, you can build a sculpted physique competitor-like bod with kettlebells.

If I wanted to go heavier, I would double up kettlebells, even using 2 different weights – e.g. double kettlebell front squats with 16kg (35lbs) + 18kg (40lbs).

I do plan to join a gym because I am itching to get back to pull-ups. I have not gone this long without doing pull-ups in over 15 years, so I hope I can still do them! Haha!

I also want to get back to heavier barbell deadlifts.
