“STOP SHOULDING ON YOURSELF” ~Clayton Barbeau _ How many times have you said to yourself, “I SHOULD not have had cake at that party last night” or “I SHOULD have gone to the gym at 6a instead of sleeping in this AM b/c I was so exhausted” or “I SHOULD be able to lift that b/c I could lift it 2yrs ago”. _ The list could go on & on. _ Why SHOULDN’T you have cake? Life is too short NOT to have cake! Why SHOULDN’T you sleep in b/c you’re exhausted? Sleeping is part of recovering from training & stress & maybe your body needed to sleep in that day. Maybe your body needed sleep MORE than it needed exercise that day. Why SHOULD you have to be exactly where you were at 2yrs ago? LIFE changes a lot in 2yrs & maybe there is a valid reason why you are unable to lift what you could lift 2yrs ago. _ “SHOULDING ON YOURSELF” is something that I talk about w/ my EmpowerU clients & at my women’s strength workshop I Am Not Afraid To Lift®. I help my clients to give themselves some grace & accept where they are at in training if they are not as strong or as fit as they used to be & to stop beating themselves up if they don’t have a perfect week w/ all things training & nutrition. _ Who sets these standards? Who’s the person telling us we should this, we should that? WE are & WE have control over the standards we set for ourselves & the scripts that go thru our minds to encourage ourselves or to discourage ourselves. _ When I was in my mid 20’s I saw a therapist after I got out of 4½ yr dysfunctional relationship & there was 1 thing she said to me during our therapy that will always stick w/ me, _ “Who can you control? YOU. You can only control YOU.” _ This applies to not just our actions & how we respond to situations & interactions, but also to our thots. We are the only ones who can control our own thots & refrain from SHOULDING on ourselves. _ We aren’t perfect. We are human & it’s unrealistic to think that we are going to be completely on top of our game all the time. FRIDAY FINISHER 💦KETTLEBELL COMPLEX💪🏼🔥 _ Part of my finisher yesterday was a kettlebell complex from Week 1, Day 3 of Kettlebell Muscle: _ 3 rounds of: _ ➡️5 Double Kettlebell Cleans _ ➡️5 Double Kettlebell Press _ ➡️5 Double Kettlebell Front Squat _ ➡️5 Double Kettlebell Push Press _ ➡️ 5 Double Kettlebell Front Squat _ REST: 120 seconds after each set of the complex. _ Then after I finished all 3 rounds of the complex I did 15 minutes of kettlebell snatches cycling through 6/8/10. So 6 R/L minute 1, 8 R/L minute 2, 10 R/L minute 3, repeat for 4 more rounds. _ Kettlebell Muscle is a 3-day/week 12-week program focused on double kettlebell complexes & chains to maximize results in minimal time. For the best results with the program, you want to follow it exactly as it is written. WHAT DO YOU FOR CARDIO?🏃🏻‍♀️💦 _ Frequently I am asked, “What do I do for cardio?” & “What do I do for my training?” _ My answer: Kettlebell swings & kettlebells, kettlebells & more kettlebells. _ Yes, there is some barbell mixed in there sometimes, but kettlebells were & will always be my first love. _ I used to run & take cycling classes A LOT until I discovered the secret to physique changes & an efficient metabolism was strength training & high intensity interval training like kettlebell swings & kettlebell snatches. _ Yes, I still take indoor cycling classes once in a great while & yes I still run maybe once or twice a year when I am traveling or on vacation & it’s the only cardio available, BUT primarily the kettlebell is my go to for all things strength & cardio. AND when I do decide to run, I can go out & do it no problem, even it’s only an annual occurrence, BECAUSE I strength train & swing kettlebells every damn day. These two things train me for LIFE. _ When my EmpowerU online coaching clients ask me if they have to extra cardio on top of the training program that I write for them, I share this not so secret, secret with them & tell them, “NOPE. Just do the kettlebell conditioning in your program you’ll be all set.” _ What do YOU do for cardio?
