Instagram doesn’t give a sh*t about you– sorry!

There are clear rules in email marketing that don’t exist on social media.

Have you seen a lot of Instagram accounts claiming to have been shut down lately?

We’ve been seeing it more and more.

And it seems to be happening to fitness professionals and other wellness practitioners.

A friend re-posted an IGTV the other day of a fitpro sobbing as she told her story of losing her 12,000 follower account because she got hacked through Facebook.

She was desperately pleading for people to share the video and help her find her followers.

She was terrified because she runs her business through Instagram and she doesn’t know how she’s going to make any money now.

We forget that Instagram doesn’t give a sh*t about us.

We forget that Instagram is a private company.

It’s owned by Facebook.

(Which also owns WhatsApp, by the way.)

And we use these private social networks for free.

They owe us nothing.

They don’t owe us features, visibility, reach, engagement, or even access.

If you are running your business with:

  • Instagram as your marketing tool,
  • Facebook groups as your program delivery tool, and
  • WhatsApp as your client contact portal,

You’re going to lose your business if you lose access to these free platforms.

Your job as a digital marketer (and yes, if you run an online business and want to sell, you must indeed be a digital marketer) is to capture the attention of your followers and then immediately direct them to your email list.

The magic happens on your email list.

  1. An email list opt-in
  2. A lead magnet

An email list opt-in is a basic “Enter your name and email address here to get updates from us.”

The prospect gives their email address and asks for nothing in return. 

These opt-ins have very low conversion rates, but they’re good to have as an option on your website home page.

A lead magnet, on the other hand, is an exchange.

You provide your prospect with a free high-quality offer in exchange for their email address.

The high-quality offer is designed to attract (this is the magnet part) your ideal client and solve a problem for them.

For example, if your ideal client is a 30-something working dad who doesn’t have time to get his workouts in, you could create a lead magnet called: “30 Days of 30-Minute After-Work Workouts for Dads.”

You’ve seen these all over social media, and you have definitely opted-in to a few.

Maybe you even opted-in to ours!
