Courageous or Crazy?

10 years ago, when I left a well paying consulting job with a steady salary, annual bonus, health benefits, vacation time, sick leave, predictable hours, and relative job security to pursue a career in the fitness industry full-time with a starting salary of basically zero dollars, no health benefits, no sick leave, no vacation time, (if you didn’t work, you didn’t get paid), insane hours, and that was not just physically demanding, but also mentally taxing, I received a lot of resistance.

Fortunately the people who were closest to me, i.e. my parents, siblings, close friends, etc., were extremely supportive as they knew how miserable I was waking up every morning to go to a job that I loathed, that I was not passionate about, that made me feel like I was treading water in life until I died rather than living life on purpose, thought it was inspiring and definitely the right thing to do. However, I often encountered people who would say to me, “Wow, you’re brave… I wouldn’t have the courage to do something like that…” , which translated to me as, “Um, you’re pretty stupid to do this…” or “Are you sure you want to leave a stable job and a steady paycheck to work as a personal trainer?”, again translated to me as, “Um, you’re pretty stupid to do this…” The naysayers made me doubt myself and my decision and trust me, in the months leading up to this change I had MANY MANY tear filled meltdowns overanalyzing if I was making the right decision; but in the end, I decided that the worst thing that could happen would be that I would fail and if I failed then I would just dust myself off and go back to working as a consultant… or, I would simply succeed.

The fact is, what these naysayers had to say to me had nothing to do with me and everything to do with their own selves and the fear that they held inside themselves. Many people fear blasting out of their comfort zone to pursue their dream, passion, or the great unknown, that which is the extraordinary outside of their ordinary.

As Jen Sincero writes in her book “You Are A Badass”,

“Watching someone else totally go for it can be incredibly upsetting to the person who’s spent a lifetime building a solid case for why they themselves can’t.”

If you are planning on making a drastic change in your life, silence the naysayers who may come at you because you are not crazy, but rather courageous, and we should all be living a life that is a reflection of who we are authentically from our core.

“Live life on purpose.” ~Jen Sincero
