While Eric and I were vacationing on Maui a few weeks ago, we did a snorkel tour at the Molokini Crater.

Before we jumped in the water to snorkel at the crater the staff member leading the snorkel group went through the rules.

One rule was that we all had to wear a flotation device – either a life jacket that you inflated yourself as needed, recommended for strong swimmers who wanted to dive down, or a floaty inner tube thing you wore around your waist for less strong swimmers or those who couldn’t be bothered with putting forth the effort to do a little swimming while snorkeling.

I understand that they probably had a liability requirement that they had to meet and therefore had to not only require flotation devices, but also offer options. HOWEVER, my honest opinion about Option Number Two is this…

Has our society really arrived at this level of laziness? Although it gets better with practice, snorkeling is not hard and swimming or rather floating on the surface of the water while wearing flippers is even less challenging.

Swimming is a survival skill. If you don’t know how to swim, I don’t care how old you are, LEARN, because one day it will save your life.

Practice to be a good and even great swimmer. You don’t have to be Michael Phelps, but put the effort into being a better swimmer. It will add years to your life because it will increase your physical fitness, add to the number of water activities you can enjoy and save your life if you get in water over your head.

Learning how to swim is investing in your HEALTH EQUITY and practicing to be a better swimmer and practicing to hold your breath and dive under and explore while snorkeling is DOING THE EXTRA.
