WHY I DRINK ONLY 1 CUP OF COFFEE PER DAY
If you watch my daily coffee stories on Instagram (follow me@ironbodybyartemis) you know how much I love coffee BUT I only drink 1 cup of coffee per day because coffee and caffeine can affect hormone balance a few different ways.
Caffeine includes coffee, tea, sodas, those addictive energy drinks and pre-workout supplements.
Caffeine elevates cortisol levels and if consumed in excess it can disrupt natural circadian rhythms.
The adrenals are the mother of all hormones, so when your cortisol is out of whack it can affect many o/ hormone balances.
Ideally, you want to wake up feeling refreshed and not like you need a cup of coffee immediately in order to wake up and be alert. Typically I don’t have my first cup of coffee until I’ve been awake for about 30min-1hr. I do not NEED it to wake up.
Coffee also becomes toxic at certain levels. Toxicity is different for different people because we each metabolize the acids in coffee and caffeine differently.
If consumed in excess it can cause anxiety, sleep disruption and heart palpitations.
You may want to cut back or eliminate caffeine if you have:
- HIGH CORTISOL: Symptoms = tired but wired at night. Caffeine raises already high cortisol levels even higher. Cortisol should be high in the AM/Early PM then lower late PM/Night so that you don’t suffer from tired but wired insomnia.
- LOW PROGESTERONE: Symptoms = night sweats around your period, heavy periods, PMS, bloating and insomnia. Caffeine raises cortisol and high cortisol can block progesterone receptors and cause low progesterone.
- EXCESS/HIGH ESTROGEN: Symptoms = depressed and excess weight. In premenopausal women caffeine in diet sodas and green tea raise estradiol levels.
- LOW ESTROGEN: Symptoms = moody, cranky and insomnia. In premenopausal women caffeine and coffee can lower estradiol levels
If you are a coffee lover like me, then my advice is to lay off the pre-workout, energy drinks, sodas, caffeinated teas and save your caffeine for ideally 1 cup of coffee in the morning.
